KUMC Society of St Stephen- November 2008 marked the 27th anniversary of the founding of Society of St. Stephen at Kingwood United Methodist Church. This organization, staffed completely by volunteers from our church and community, helps hundreds of needy families monthly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with food, clothing and utility/medication assistance. In addition to their regular weekly activities, Society of St. Stephen sponsors and organizes special school supply drives each fall, as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas food and toy programs. Several of our class members are active volunteers at Society and can tell you how rewarding it is to reach out in Jesus' name with His love and caring Spirit in someone's time of need. Society of St. Stephen is one of the KUMC mission ministries our class regularly supports with quarterly donations on your behalf, but the need for additional support is always greatest around the holidays.
Society of St. Stephen provides a tremendous service to our community and allows us to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus by being a part of His mission to those in need. Please pray about making a monetary donation to Society of St. Stephen, a donation of men's, women's or children's clothing for the clothes pantry( make cleaning out your closets a family project! ), sponsor a child for the Christmas toy drive, or volunteer one of the most valuable commodities we all have- our time- in service to the Lord at Society of St. Stephen.
Your children's closets overflowing? We can help! Society of St. Stephen needs children's clothing for "Back to School."
Class member and associate pastor's wife, Deb Evans, has taken on the daunting task of keeping the clothing room at Society of St. Stephens organized and orderly, and she has done an outstanding job, along with many other dedicated volunteers. As Society is getting ready for the upcoming school year, in addition to signing families up for school supplies for their children, we try to set aside clothes we feel will be needed for the school children and youth ( age 5-18) to start back to school.
Most of our own children have the luxury of having the opportunity to purchase new school clothes for each new school year. For the majority of school children who are helped by Society, new clothes are a dream, and usually only fulfilled when they have the opportunity to find "gently used" clothing at Society. These families are just trying to make ends meet, put food on the table, pay their utility bills and can't afford to buy new school clothes for their children. If you have time this summer and can go through your children's closets for clothes they no longer wear, have outgrown or simply don't like anymore, we have loads of children who could use those clothes. We are especially in need of boys clothes size 6- young men's.
Society of St. Stephens is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am- 12 noon to accept donations. Tax certificates are available. If you have any questions about Society of St. Stephen, several class members are regular volunteers and would be happy to help you: Pam Clarke, Nancy Bray, Diana Rutherford, Pam Tuley, April Kiker, Faye Mc Math, Susan Ward, Deb Evans and Lynn Harper. Come join us! It is extremely rewarding to help those less fortunate. To volunteer, contact SOSS Director, Margaret White @281-360-7405. ** To help with the SOSS School Supplies organization days and pass out day in August, contact April Kiker, SOSS School supplies coordinator @ 281-359-7315.
